Raila: I have no offshore accounts, all my wealth are in Kenya
ODM leader Raila Odinga has waded into the controversial Pandora Papers leak, saying leaders with offshore accounts should declare to the public and that there was no problem in having accounts overseas.
Speaking on Wednesday morning during an interview with the national broadcaster (KBC), Mr. Odinga also revealed all his wealth is in the country and stood by President Uhuru Kenyatta saying the Head of State had promised to explain himself to Kenyans on claims the Kenyatta family has wealth stashed abroad.
”I have no offshore accounts. All my wealth are within the country. I am playing locally. I am sure the truth will come out. The President has said he will give more details on the claims. I want every Kenyan with offshore accounts to come out and declare them,” the ODM leader said.
The former prime minister who is a strong proponent of the war on corruption has called on scrutiny of the wealth of corrupt state officers plus top lawyers who hold property on behalf of corrupt public officials.
On Monday, President Uhuru Kenyatta responded to the revelations of the hidden wealth of billionaires and heads of governments in a report published by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalism (ICIJ).
In a statement released by the President’s spokesperson Kanze Dena Mararo, Mr. Kenyatta said the reports will enhance financial transparency and openness in Kenya and globally.
”The Pandora Papers and subsequent follow-up audits will lift that veil of secrecy and darkness for those who cannot explain their assets or wealth,” Uhuru said.
