Uhuru’s order to IG Mutyambai after mysterious death of Agnes Tirop

President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed police to expedite investigations into the killing of Olympian Agnes Tirop.

This is after Tirop was found dead on Wednesday at her home in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County with stab wounds.

“Tirop was found dead at their home in Iten after she was allegedly stabbed by her husband,”

a statement by Athletics Kenya read in part.

President Kenyatta called for speedy investigations and bring the culprits to book.

“It is even more painful that Agnes, a Kenyan hero by all measures, painfully lost her young life through a criminal act perpetuated by selfish and cowardly people. I urge our law enforcement agencies led by the National Police Service to track down and apprehend the criminals responsible for the killing of Agnes so that they can face the full force of the law,”

the President directed.

The 25-year-old burst into the national limelight in 2012 after claiming the junior cross country championships. Since then, she has proceeded to represent Kenya on multiple occasions.

In 2015, she became the second-youngest medallist at the 2015 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in the women’s race.

President Kenyatta who is out of the country on an official visit to the United States, prayed for God’s grace and calm for the family, friends, relatives and supporters of Agnes Tirop as they come to terms with the athlete’s shocking death.
