Justice Served, Former MP Lempurkel Jailed For One Year For Slapping Female Colleague - hivipundetv.com

Court has sentenced Ex-Laikipia North MP Mathew Lempurkel to one year imprisonment for slapping the current Laikipia North MP Sarah Korere.

Lempurkel is said to have committed the offence on November 21, 2016 at Harambee House in Nairobi.

Lempurkel had earlier pleaded with the court to defer his prosecution to allow him to pursue a complaint he had filed against Korere with the DPP, but his bid flopped after a magistrate rejected his application.

Court charge sheet shows that Lempurkel slapped Korere on the left cheek and kicked her on the lower abdomen, causing her actual bodily harm contrary to Section 251 of the Penal Code.

He was picked outside Parliament buildings a day later and taken to the Kileleshwa Police Station.

He denied the charge and was directed by senior principal magistrate Joyce Gandani to deposit Sh100,000 cash bail to secure his release, pending trial.

In addition, the magistrate warned Lempurkel against intimidating witnesses.

In her ruling, Senior Principal Magistrate Hellen Onkwani, sentenced the former MP without the option of a fine, but said he had the right to appeal the judgement within 14 days.

“I note from the mitigation record that the accused is a leader who needs to be a good example to others so I proceed to sentence the accused person serve one year imprisonment,” Onkwani ruled.
