Police in Kisumu county have been forced to swing into action after rowdy youths staged protests in Kondele during Deputy President William Ruto’s tour in the region.
Ruto, who was on the second day of his popularisation visit to ODM leader Raila Odinga’s backyard, was met by hostile Kondele locals who pelted his convoy with stones. Reports reaching our desk indicate the second in command was forced to cut short his speech as law enforcers lobbed teargas at the goons who also engaged the police in running battles.
A crowd that had gathered to listen to Ruto was dispersed with teargas as the police dealt with the charged youths who did not spare a moment to hurl stones at the DP.
The fracas broke out moments after his arrival at Kondele roundabout.
The tension started building even before Ruto’s arrival in Kondele with some youths even holding up pro-ODM placards as a sign of their rejection of the second in command. Ruto’s charm offensive in Nyanza Before the chaotic entry to Kondele, Ruto received a grand welcome to Jua Cali in Kisumu where he promised to help the hustlers like he helped Raila Odinga become prime minister. The second in command told the locals that he supported Raila until he became prime minister and also helped President Uhuru Kenyatta win the presidency in both the 2013 and 2017 elections.
In the same vein, the DP said he would now focus on uplifting hustlers through his bottom-up economic model. “Didn’t I help Agwambo and also Uhuru. It’s now time to support hustlers. Do you all agree that we should…work together?” he posed.
